Once upon a time, in a very far country, there was a kingdom called Brasov, which was ruled by a severe, though fair emperor. The Emperor had a very beautiful daughter, who used to have several virtues, and people loved her, too, since she was kind-hearted and wise. When honour used to be the most valuable virtue of a man, four knights hit the road to ask the hand of the beautiful princess. This is how the ?Tournament of Citadels? started in Bran, Rasnov, Fagaras and Brasov. ?May the best win!?
Medieval market
The ?Tournament of Citadels? started in Bran, on Queen Mary?s Plateau, then was continued in Fagaras (August 19th-22 th 2010) at Fagaras Citadel, Brasov (September 4th-5th 2010) at the arenas Ion Tiriac, followed by Rasnov (September 18th-19th 2010) at the Citadel.
?We have created a genuine medieval market where skilled artisans and potters worked live, medieval food was served, and the bravest visitors ate the knights? specialty, which gave them magic powers ? the dragon?s belly? says Werner Braun, President of the German Economic Club Brasov, the organiser.
Swords and archery show
Swords and archery shows, fights between knights, tournaments and horses parades attracted tourists.
?We want an active public involved in the medieval actions. This is the reason for which we have prepared 300 costumes everyone can wear, armours and artisanal swords they can take pictures with. Everything is dynamic; knights and princesses shall walk through the medieval market accompanied by the music of famous minstrels. Anyone can get inside these characters. Sketches where white and black knights possessed by malefic spirits, fight for honour, shall be interpreted by skilful actors.? said Christian Macedonski, one of the founders of the German Economic Club from Brasov:
Fire dances
Night shows with torches, flame throwers, fire dances and a mystic fire where the hero was the dreaded ?Earl? were organized as well.
The Citadel of Fagaras hosted at the same time the Festival 'Tournament of Citadels' and the 'Days of Fagaras Citadel'. The opening of events was done with the parade of folk costumes, the parade of courtiers and shield bearers, a folk show followed by projection of historical films.
The tournament continued in the Citadel of Brasov and in the Citadel of Rasnov, where similar events were organized.
