The ninth edition of the International Festival ?Enescu and the World?s Music? was a musical marathon which took place on 9-19 August in Sinaia, Busteni, Predeal and Brasov. The town hall and the local council Predeal made available the Cathedral ?St. Emperors Constantine and Elena?, to host the concerts. The festival is an homage to the personality and creation of George Enescu. The closing concert on August 19 celebrates, at every edition, the date of birth of the Romanian great musician.
National Youth Orchestra
The 2008?s edition is quite different from the previous ones by organizing, for the first time in Romania, of a National Youth Orchestra, composed of Romanian instrumentalists with ages between 16 and 25 years, from Bucharest, Cluj, Iasi, Timisoara, Brasov, Targu-Mures, Baia Mare, Constanta, Kishinev. During the 10 days of the festival, the young instrumental performers have been trained by groups of instruments at international level by the teachers invited: Liviu Prunaru, concertmaster of the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, Marius Nichiteanu, solo viola at the Radio Orchestra of Hamburg, Dorin Marc, double bass solo at the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra (Sergiu Celibidache's Orchestra!), Marin Cazacu, cellist, soloist of the George Enescu Philharmonic of Bucharest and Adrian Petrescu, oboe solo of the Symphonic Orchestra of the same Philharmonic.
Summer School
After the first three days of training, the young musicians gathered in a symphony orchestra (over 50 persons), conducted by maestro Cristian Mandeal, director of George Enescu Philharmonic in Bucharest, who prepared the program of three extraordinary concerts. The festival?s program also included extraordinary recitals performed, among other famous musicians, by the violinist Gabriel Croitoru (winner of Guarnerius violin which belonged to George Enescu).
Musical Masterpieces
The 9th edition of the Festival can also be considered one of the musical masterpieces, taking into account the reference works from the universal repertoire, included in the concert programmes. The Summer school project and the 12 concerts and extraordinary recitals were made possible by Serafim Antropov ?Friends of Music? Foundation.
