The Association for Tourism Promotion and Development of Brasov county opened a touring information point at Fagaras, to promote the history, the culture and the traditions of Transylvania, specially those of Tara Fagarasului (Fagaras?s Land). The County Council Brasov intends to attract the maximum number of tourists in this area of reach resources and wonderful places, people and ancient customs.
Tara Fagarasului is one of the most ancient and important Romanian compact settlement areas of Transylvania. It belongs to the sub-Carpathian regions where the history of the Romanian people was made. Located in the middle the Romanian settlement area, Tara Fagarasului profoundly marked the history of the Romanian medieval society.
The Wooden Coin
The history of Fagaras town is intimately connected to Tara Fagarasului? one. The town?s name comes from ?fagaras?, which means ?wooden coin?, the currency used to pay the settlement?s builders. This kind of coins has been conserved till today and can be seen at the local History Museum.
The Stronghold of Fagaras
The stronghold was built at the end of XIV century, on the site of an ancient earthen citadel erected in the XII century. It was transformed in fastened castle in the 16th centuries, to become a royal residence a century later. The Stronghold of Fagaras was built in the middle of the vastest feudal realm of Transylvania, encompassing 20 burgs and 52 villages. The citadel stimulated the development of corporations, especially tanners and potters. It became an important political and social centre and a luxurious residence for princes and palatines.
