150 years of the Prefect`s Institution celebration

This year the Prefect`s Institution has celebrated 150 years since it was first founded in Romania, which is also acknowledged by the Communal Law of April 1st 1864 and the Law on the creation of County Councils of April 2nd 1864 according to which "the Prefect, the head of the county administration, controls all works of this institution and implements the decisions of the County Council".
The origins of the title "Prefect" go back before the Romanian United Principalities (1859) and existed in Muntenia and Moldavia regions, even though the persons embodying such titles were called "County Subprefects" or "Chief Administrative Officers".
Brief history
Documents accounting on Prefectures still exist and date back to antiquity when, in Ancient Rome, the Prefect was at the top of the imperial officials hierarchy, carrying out his duties in Prefectures (administrative jurisdictions of the Roman State), and acted as a representative and on behalf of the Emperor. Along the years the role of the Prefect`s Institution has been given much importance by the country`s succeeding rulers, kings or governments who conferred it different powers, from the role of a limited powers institution to that of head of the county, according to the changes in the laws regulating the role of the Prefectures.
High public officers
After the Revolution in December 1989, the position and role of the Prefect`s Institution and, implicitly, the Prefect in a state subject to rule of law have been restored. Along with the Subprefect, they belong to the category of high public officers.
"150 years from the creation of the Prefect`s Institution in Romania is regarded as a celebration moment when we should pay respect to our preceding prefects and subprefects for the way they chose to do their work serving the national interest to promote a credible and coherent image of the institution that we, now, represent", said the current Prefect of Brasov, Mr. Romer Ambrus Sandor Mihaly.
