On the Pentecost Sunday, on June 23rd 2013, considered by the Orthodox Christians the day when the Holy Spirit descends over us, in commune Feldioara, Brasov county, "May day" was organized, the continuation of a project for the promotion of customs and traditions, which was done with European funds. This time, the Town Hall of commune Feldioara supported this event, of the same ampleness, and from its own resources. The custom gathered the boys in festive costumes; they started going in suite in the locality with adorned horses, carriages with May poles and they were accompanied by brass band music; they also beat the trees at the gates of the girls to be married.
Holiday atmosphere
"This custom with traditional cultural elements has already become a tradition; it brings many tourists and it is a good occasion to promote the locality. We are on the cultural route connecting Brasov to Sighisoara; this is always an advantage, and tourists stop here to recreate in a picturesque environment with multiple possibilities. The Evangelic Church, the Citadel, the lakes from the surrounding areas and the celebration of the most important events of the live of the community are a small part of the tourist potential of the locality. For Pentecost, the parade, the suite, the brass band, the folk costumes of Romanians and Transylvanian Saxons, the dances, the preferred singers and the musical bands make the commune look like celebrating and make a connection between the cultural-historical past and present," declared Sorin Taus, the Mayor of commune Feldioara.
Girls to be married
The boys wearing festive costumes made a tour with carriages with May poles in the centre of Feldioara; tourists and inhabitants applauded wildly and assisted to beating the young trees in the park, which was a sign of starting the celebration. Then, they went to the houses of the girls to be married for beating the "May poles" to gates. Girls? parents welcomed them with cookies and refreshments to reward them. Thrilled young women were glancing to look for the one their heart would choose from the group of boys. The boys took the girls and made them sit on their knees as a sign of mutual feelings. They spent nice moments together and went to the stage arranged in the courtyard of the Cultural Centre where they participated in the festivities organized on the occasion of Pentecost.
Cultural inheritance
Among young people there were also children dressed in folk costumes; they went on carriages, stood up the same way as young people did, and went to the houses of the people with girls to be married, who had little sisters. The purpose of involving such little children in this custom is to bring the cultural inheritance further and to awaken the desire to continue traditions in them. The Town Hall involved in setting up a folk group for children in the Elementary School and the High-School from the locality, thus hoping that results were to come.
