Sanpetru: Spring Bird?s Eye (ruscuta in Romanian)
|
|
Sanpetru, formely called Sant Petru (Pittersbarch, Pitersbarχ in the Saxon dialect, Petersberg, Petersdorf, Petersburg in German and Barcaszentpéter, conversational Szentpéter in Hungarian) is a town in the county of Brasov, Transylvania, Romania, lying at the bottom of Lempes hill (704 m), famous for its natural sanctuary. On the way to Harman, fritillaries and spring bird?s eyes grow, which were declared monuments of nature. The last of them gives the name to the greatest holiday ?the Days of Sanpetru?.
Tourist attractions
In Sanpetru tourists can visit the Evangelical Church, the Orthodox Church, the natural sanctuary ?Lempes Hill? or practice gliding at ?Iosif Silimon? Airclub. The ascending currants forming around Lempes hill offer good conditions for practicing this sport. The rural citadel dating back from the 15th century is a little different from the typical buildings of this kind from Barsa Region. This difference resides in the large space between the two rows of walls (used as shelter for the animals) and the shape of firing holes on the inferior row, conceived for archers. The painting inside the citadel?s funeral chapel belongs to the Gothic style and dates back in the 14th century.
The Orthodox Church dates back in the 18th century, displaying beautiful Brancoveanu frescos.
The Days of Sanpetru
On the first Sunday after the celebration of St. Peter and Paul Day, the Town Hall and the Local Council organize the Days of Sanpetru, also called the Spring Bird?s Eye, at its 14th edition this year.
?It has already become a tradition and the entire local community, guests and tourists take part to this event. The Days of Sanpetru is organized under the auspices of the spring bird?s eye, a unique flower in Europe which only grows on Lempes hill. We were glad to see so many people assisting to this event, but also involving in raising funds for the hard-hit flood survivors from Prut-Siret-Danube area,? said Mr. Ioan Rusu, Mayor of Sanpetru village.
Cultural events
Several cultural events were organized on the occasion of Sanpetru Days: the march of Juni Brasovecheni on horseback, girls and boys, brass band concerts, the performance of the children folk group ?Ruscuta de primavara?, the folk group ?Fagarasul?, the members of group ?Nemuritorii?. The party went on with songs, dances, fun, fireworks and an airplane demonstration. At the same time football, rugby games and children races were organized.
