Gastronomic Contest

The traditional and cultural events of Prejemr already became famous not only in Romania but also abroad, thanks to their originality and the manner of presentation. The most recent is the pickle contest; at the first edition, the housewives presented their creations at the contest organized by the town hall Prejmer and the Association Ethno-Rural. The gastronomic secrets aroused the tourists? curiosity.

The housewife?s Larder

The contest ?From the housewife larder? gathered many participants: boarding houses, experimented housewives but also youths who learned the pickle art from their parents and grandparents.

100% natural Recipes

The inhabitants of Prejmer have a much diversified culinary tradition, with German influences. The housewives are very skilled in preparing the most various recipes: rhubarb confiture, rhubarb broth to sour the stocks, quince jam in peaches syrup, unboiled cherries stew, red pepper collation with pineapple, baked aubergine collation with backed red pepper and green onion, cooked aubergines salad, concentrated tomatoes soup, plums in vinegar, red pepper stuffed with cauliflower, hot pepper past. All the aliments are 100% natural.

Victuals against the Invaders

The event is an original continuation of an old habit, by the time when people used to take refuge in the 272 chambers full of victuals within the Prejmer Fortress against the sieges of the invaders. ?Rumour says that the inhabitants used to pick up a fat woman that they perch on the citadel walls, with a big bread in her hands. The woman showed the Turks the bread than her naked bottom, taping on it. The gesture was meant to confirm that the besiegers had plenty of supplies. Thenceforth, the housewives have theirs larders full?, says Cristina Balog, the citadel?s curator.
