Invitation to visit Hălchiu

Hălchiu is a commune in the County of Brașov, located between Feldioara and Codlea, 16 kilometers away from Braşov. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the place, and to see the Evangelical Church, which is surrounded by a fortress with two enclosures, the Romanian Orthodox Church dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel (1791) (in Romanian: Biserica “Sf. Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril”), the Evangelical Church in Satu Nou, the St. Dumitru Romanian Orthodox Church (in Romanian: Biserica „Sf. Dumitru”) in Satu Nou, and can admire the altars of these churches, along with their frescoes and old icons.

Hălchiu in Days of Old

The Mayor of Hălchiu, Ioan Gârbacea, declared: „Restoring Hălchiu to its former glory means to us the joy of bringing back, at least in part, the charm of its former life. In the year dedicated to the Centennial of the Great Union, we have the moral duty to remember the history of the locality, its customs and traditions, and to invite all those who want to learn about our history of these places to come to Hălchiu. The Church in Hălchiu, build in 1434, boasts the oldest bell in Țara Bârsei preserved until today. Nowadays, these historical attractions, which we have endeavoured to preserve, are part of the tourist circuit.”

Promoting traditions

Each year, a local celebration entitled “Zilele Hălchiului” (Days of Hălchiu) is held in the commune of Hălchiu holds. This event takes place in the month of September and promotes young talents. The folk ensembles, vocalists and instrumentalists performing during the event entertain the public with songs and dances. The event begins with a parade of traditional costumes, which starts in front of the City Hall and ends on the plateau between the chestnuts. The traditional Romanian customs are preserved due to the Folk Ensemble “Floare de castan” in Hălchiu, which has a varied repertoire of folk dances gathered from the whole area.

Cultural management

Among those invited to participate in “Zilele Hălchiului” is the German ensemble, which presents the German traditional costumes and authentic Saxon dances. In order to promote the local customs and traditions, the City Hall and the City Council carry out cultural management activities aimed at ensuring the preservation of the local traditional values. Therefore, the City Hall invests in tradition and promotion, by means of various projects.
